Black walnut is widely regarded as the premier domestic hardwood for fine furniture making. Its rich, chocolate-brown heartwood — ranging from warm caramel to near-black purplish hues — develops an even deeper patina with age, making every piece a living record of time.

The species grows natively across eastern North America, from southern Ontario through the Appalachian states. While not indigenous to British Columbia, Gerrasimos sources premium walnut slabs from trusted suppliers who practice sustainable forestry across the species' native range. The wood we select is always kiln-dried and carefully graded for colour consistency and figure.

Black walnut's grain is typically straight with occasional waves that produce a subtle, shimmering figure when light plays across a finished surface. Crotch wood — taken from the junction of trunk and branch — can display spectacular feathered or flame patterns that are prized for statement tabletops. Bookmatched walnut slabs, where two sequential slices are opened like a book, create mirror-image patterns that become the centrepiece of a room.

From a workshop perspective, walnut is a joy to work. It machines cleanly with sharp tooling, holds detail well for edge profiles, and accepts both oil and film finishes without blotching. Its moderate Janka hardness of 1,010 lbf strikes a balance between machinability and surface resilience — hard enough to resist everyday dings on a dining table, yet forgiving enough to hand-plane to a glass-smooth finish.

Walnut's natural durability is notable. The heartwood contains juglone and other extractives that resist fungal decay and insect attack, making it a sound choice for pieces meant to last generations. In our Okanagan shop, we pair walnut with hand-rubbed Rubio Monocoat and high-quality epoxy systems for river tables, ensuring both beauty and long-term protection.

For care, walnut furniture benefits from periodic oiling and protection from prolonged direct sunlight, which can lighten the heartwood over time. A simple routine of dusting and occasional wax or oil refreshment will keep a walnut piece looking extraordinary for decades.

Gerrasimos selects black walnut for our most distinctive commissions — live edge dining tables, statement desks, and epoxy river tables — because its visual depth and working qualities are unmatched. When a client wants a single piece that anchors an entire room, walnut is almost always the answer.
